The health scenario in Ernakulam has become increasingly troubling, with the district reporting five deaths due to leptospirosis within the first thirteen days of July. This troubling figure marks the highest mortality rate linked to this disease in the entire state of Kerala. The fatalities were recorded across various regions, including Kalamassery, Kuttampuzha, Kadayiruppu, Pattimattom, and Udyogamandal.
Moreover, Ernakulam has been grappling with a significant number of cases involving infectious diseases throughout this month. As of July 13, the district had documented 392 influenza cases, maintaining its position as the state’s leader in this health issue. Additionally, there were 536 suspected cases and 252 confirmed cases of dengue. Leptospirosis reports included five suspected cases and 19 confirmed cases as well.
Regional Context of Leptospirosis
The other districts that reported leptospirosis-related fatalities include Palakkad, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kottayam, with each district recording one death.
In response to this rising health crisis, a local health official announced the initiation of an epidemic prevention action plan aptly named ‘Arogyabheri’ just a week ago. This proactive approach aims to tackle the surge in communicable diseases.
“Diseases are on the rise, and we need effective intervention from all quarters. The epidemic prevention action plan has been launched in view of this, and its activities are under way. Once it is implemented across the local self-government bodies, we expect a perceptible decline in the number of cases,” explained the health official.
Measures to Combat the Spread
The unfortunate death in Kalamassery involved an 18-year-old migrant worker from Assam. In light of this incident, Anju Manoj Mani, chairperson of the municipality’s health standing committee, stated that the local government has taken steps to distribute preventive medications.
“Medicines have been distributed as a precautionary measure. We are planning to raise awareness among migrant workers about the need to seek medical attention at the earliest if they develop symptoms such as fever,” said Ms. Anju.
With these alarming health statistics and proactive measures underway, authorities in Ernakulam are working diligently to address the public health challenges posed by rising infectious diseases.
