NEW DELHI: Dalvir Singh Kala, a prominent leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and a close associate of party president Sukhbir Singh Badal, was shot and wounded by an unidentified assailant riding a motorcycle in the Mansa district of Punjab on Monday evening, according to police reports.
The shooting occurred in Bareta town while Kala, a former member of the Zila Parishad, was preparing to head home from his shop located in the local grain market.
Eyewitnesses described a startling scene as the assailant, who reportedly appeared to be in his 20s, intercepted Kala and fired a single shot before making a quick escape. Local resident Gurjant Singh observed, “It appeared that a single bullet was fired,” highlighting the suddenness of the attack.
Kala was hit by the bullet and was promptly transported to a hospital for medical care. As of now, his medical condition has not been publicly disclosed.
In response to the incident, law enforcement officials have initiated an investigation to track down the shooter, focusing on identifying the suspect as quickly as possible.
Authorities have also begun examining CCTV footage from the vicinity as part of their inquiry. Additional forensic evidence, along with statements from eyewitnesses, is being gathered to determine the motive behind this brazen act of violence.
This incident raises concerns over political safety in the region, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by public figures in Punjab.
