The Red Sanders Special (RSS) Additional District Judge (ADJ) Court has handed down a significant ruling, sentencing three individuals involved in red sandalwood smuggling to five years in prison, along with a hefty fine of ₹3 lakh each. This verdict was delivered by Judge A. Narasimha Murthy on Monday, July 13, 2026.
Those convicted include Gunishetti Puttalayya, aged 38, from Anasampalli village in Renigunta mandal, and two others, Petluri Rajayya, 30, and Gaddamvari Manikanta, 27, both residents of Nellutlavaripalli village in Chinnagottigallu mandal—both within the Tirupati district.
Background of the Case
The case traces back to 2017 when Sub-Inspector G. Chandra Mohan, along with his team at the Bhakarapeta police station, registered the offence against the trio. Evidence revealed that they had unlawfully entered the Seshachalam reserve forest area to smuggle red sandalwood, a valuable and protected species.
The judicial proceedings benefitted from the ‘Good Trial Monitoring’ mechanism, ensuring that the case was presented with a strong set of evidence leading to their conviction.

Superintendent of Police L. Subbarayudu emphasized the importance of protecting forest resources, stating, “Protecting forest wealth is everyone’s responsibility. The district police will continue to take uncompromising and strict action against forest-related crimes such as red sandalwood smuggling.”
He urged the public to play an active role in conservation efforts by reporting any suspicious activities to the police, reinforcing the commitment to effective investigations and robust court proceedings that ensure offenders face justice.
