NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for compassion towards students accused of verbally abusing him during the Jantar Mantar protest has sparked renewed discussions. Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has openly questioned whether the Prime Minister’s message of forgiveness will translate into tangible actions.
In response to Modi’s selfie-style video shared on his official Instagram and X accounts, Dipke remarked, “Fraand, sirf reel par hi maaf karoge ya cases bhi wapas loge?” (Friend, will you forgive them only through reels, or will you also withdraw the cases?). This comment came in light of a 15-year-old protestor from Noida facing charges for alleged derogatory remarks made towards the Prime Minister.
Details of the Incident
The Prime Minister addressed the controversy, stating, “Today I just feel like talking to you. The country and the world have witnessed what happened at Jantar Mantar. Some mischievous children used very crude and abusive language, words that do not befit any civilized society. I was personally abused, and even my late mother was subjected to abuse. It was a truly ugly spectacle.”
Modi emphasized the need for understanding, urging society to reconsider their approach. He acknowledged the public’s anger but suggested it would be more constructive to view the situation as a chance for reform rather than punishment. “Mistakes are part of growing up,” he added, advocating for society to help guide and forgive the youth rather than ostracize them.
Legal Implications and Public Response
In his video, PM Modi expressed his desire to see the cases against the students dropped, emphasizing that legal proceedings will not change their behavior. “Punishing them, dragging them through court proceedings, and harassing them in society, none of this will change the situation. I want to forgive them. Society, too, should accept this,” he stated, encouraging the students to learn from their mistakes.
Dipke has previously criticized the police for what he perceives as selective law enforcement. In a video shared by CJP on X, he highlighted an apparent hypocrisy: “If you are registering cases for abusing, when will cases be registered against those BJP IT Cell members who have been using abusive language for women online for years?”
According to Dipke, members of the BJP have consistently targeted women on social media with derogatory remarks. He questioned why similar legal actions had not been taken against them. “They have been using all kinds of words, not respecting women from any angle. And they proudly write in their bio, ‘Followed by PM Modi.’ Such people have abused girls. When will the case be filed on them?”
He argues that while abusive language is objectionable, it should not automatically result in criminal charges. “If cases are to be filed for abusing, the highest number of cases will be filed against the BJP’s IT Cell, because they are the ones who have abused women the most,” he pointed out.
Continuing Criticism of the Government
This is not the first instance of Dipke reacting publicly to PM Modi’s social media messages. Earlier this week, he commented on the Prime Minister’s video advocating a new anti-paper leak legislation, stating, “Your skin is brighter than the country’s future,” highlighting his ongoing critique of the government’s effectiveness.
