As the political landscape heats up ahead of the July 30 bypoll for the Manjalpur Assembly constituency in Vadodara, contrasting messages have emerged from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress. Each party has presented its strategy after their candidates submitted nominations, with Congress criticizing the state government’s governance and the BJP pledging to continue the legacy of the late MLA Yogesh Patel.
The bypoll was called following the passing of BJP MLA and former Gujarat Minister Yogesh Patel on June 2, after a prolonged illness. His legacy is a focal point for the BJP’s campaign.
Congress’s Stand on Civic Issues
In a statement after filing his nomination, Congress candidate Bhikhabhai Rabari, who serves as the vice-president of Gujarat Congress and has previously held the position of State Minister, emphasized that this election would focus on pressing civic issues impacting the Manjalpur constituency and Vadodara city. Rabari highlighted concerns such as inadequate infrastructure, significant traffic congestion, and allegations of corruption.
“Many issues affect the entire city, including traffic, unclean drinking water, overflowing drainage systems, and substandard roads. The BJP has failed to tackle these problems,”
Rabari noted, showcasing a range of grievances faced by residents. He further accused the BJP government of falling short on its promises to transform Vadodara into a smart city, claiming that corruption had flourished during their tenure. Expressing a desire to be the people’s voice, he criticized what he labeled as “one-sided rule.”
When questioned about his chances in the election, he commented, “Victory or defeat will be decided by the electorate, but I am contesting to win.”
BJP’s Emphasis on Legacy and Continuity
In contrast, the BJP’s candidate Satish Patel expressed his intention to complete the unfinished projects of the late Yogesh Patel and to continue his vision for the constituency. He stated,
“The incomplete works of Yogeshbhai will be completed. We will continue what Yogeshbhai started and also undertake new initiatives. We will fulfill the vision he had for Manjalpur.”
Patel conveyed a sense of confidence about the BJP’s standing in the constituency, asserting that the party has a strong backing from its grassroots workers and the electorate. He declared that the seat has traditionally belonged to the BJP and would remain with them, urging voters to honor the legacy of Yogeshbhai Patel by voting in large numbers.
Candidacy Announcements and Election Date
The BJP officially announced Satish Patel as its candidate on July 10, while Congress followed suit by naming Bhikhabhai Rabari on July 12. The bypoll will take place on July 30, with vote counting scheduled for August 3, marking a critical event in Gujarat’s political calendar.
