The Kerala Government has initiated a re-investigation concerning the black flag protest led by the Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists against former Health Minister Veena George, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. This incident took place at Kannur railway station during the concluding days of the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in February.
According to a statement from Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala’s office, this decision was influenced by a petition lodged by KSU activists who were arrested under what they claim are baseless charges of attempted murder and armed assault related to the protest. These individuals are currently in judicial custody.
The government’s deliberation on this matter includes options for forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a Superintendent of Police or forwarding the case to the State Police Crime Branch. This apparent escalation underscores the gravity of the situation.
Political Tensions Escalate
The protest against Ms. George ignited a politically charged atmosphere, resulting in violent clashes between supporters of the CPI(M) and the Congress party across various districts of Kerala. Ms. George arrived at the railway station under significant police protection and was later hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Kannur District Hospital due to reported soft tissue injuries to her neck and hand.
Divergent narratives from both the CPI(M) and Congress regarding the incident have emerged, with television footage capturing the chaos. The CPI(M) accused KSU activists of being part of a politically motivated conspiracy orchestrated by the Congress to create unrest, especially as Kerala approaches the 2026 Assembly elections.
Responses from Political Leaders
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has drawn attention to this issue by visiting Ms. George in the ICU, aiming to place the Congress party, which was in opposition at that time, on the defensive regarding the situation. CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan and CPI leader Binoy Viswam described the actions against Ms. George as premeditated mob violence, allegedly incited by the Congress leadership.
“The mob violence against Ms. George was preplanned and orchestrated by Congress leadership,” stated M.V. Govindan.
Conversely, V D Satheesan, the then Leader of the Opposition in Kerala and present Chief Minister, criticized the incident as a staged performance by the CPI(M) to distract the public from pressing issues, such as the failing public health system in Kerala. He insinuated that Ms. George had deliberately sought hospital admission to manipulate public perception and place the United Democratic Front (UDF) in a difficult position ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
KSU’s Legal Action and Claims
Mr. Satheesan also argued that the police cordon had barred KSU activists from approaching Ms. George, emphasizing that the serious charges laid against the students were politically motivated. Previously, the KSU approached the High Court, asserting that they were victims of the LDF government’s oppressive actions and that the allegations against them were manifestly false, as evidenced by the television coverage of the protest.
This situation illustrates the ongoing political turmoil in Kerala and highlights the complex dynamics between the various political factions as they gear up for upcoming elections.
