NEW DELHI: India expressed significant concern on Friday regarding the escalating conflict in West Asia. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing the necessity for restraint amid rising regional tensions. Following their discussion, Jaishankar took to social media platform X, stating that he had a “tele-conversation” with Araghchi and reiterated India’s apprehensions about the ongoing deterioration in security.
“Conveyed our deep concerns at the ongoing hostilities in the region,” he articulated, highlighting India’s diplomatic stance on the matter.
Focus on Maritime Safety
During the conversation, Jaishankar underscored the importance of safeguarding commercial shipping and the safety of seafarers, given that the conflict threatens critical maritime routes. “Strongly urged that attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers be avoided under any circumstance. India condemns any such attack by any party,” he added, reflecting the nation’s commitment to maritime security.
Jaishankar noted that he was informed of Tehran’s viewpoint during their exchange. “Was apprised of Iran’s perspective of current developments and discussions underway. India is always supportive of dialogue and diplomacy,” he indicated, reinforcing India’s position for diplomatic engagement.
Amplified Tensions with the US
This diplomatic conversation arose amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. Iran has claimed recent strikes on American military facilities in Kuwait, raising concerns over direct conflict.
According to Iranian state media, the Iranian army executed drone attacks targeting the US-operated Ahmad al-Jaber Air Base as part of what they referred to as the 27th phase of Operation Lightning. Tehran argues that these actions were in response to a recent US strike on a residential area on Qeshm Island, alleging that it targeted important military infrastructure.
Additionally, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for attacks on the US-operated Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait, alleging that they had effectively destroyed drone hangars and a fuel storage facility. The IRGC has asserted their commitment to continue military operations until US forces evacuate the region.
US Response
In stark contrast, the United States has rejected Iran’s claims. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) noted that no American aircraft sustained damage in the attacks and confirmed that all missiles and drones were either intercepted or failed to reach their designated targets. This statement underscores the complex and ongoing tensions between these nations, with implications for regional stability.
