NEW DELHI: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has intensified its enforcement efforts against food business operators, initiating product recalls, suspending manufacturing licenses, and prohibiting the sale of certain health supplements due to serious breaches of food safety regulations.
In one significant action, FSSAI directed M/s Sun Organic Industries Pvt Ltd to promptly recall its Wonderland Raisins. This decision came after regulatory tests revealed pesticide residues surpassing the permissible limits. Samples analyzed at both the National Food Laboratory in Ghaziabad and the Referral Laboratory at NIFTEM-K were classified as “unsafe” under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Consequently, the company must recall the entire batch from the market and provide regular updates on the recall process.
In a separate enforcement move, FSSAI suspended the license of Dior Pharmaceuticals’ Nutraceutical Manufacturing Unit effective immediately. An inspection uncovered significant non-compliance issues relating to regulatory and hygiene standards. According to the FSSAI, the manufacturing unit exhibited deficiencies in quality management systems and failed to adhere to essential manufacturing protocols.
Additionally, FSSAI issued a prohibition order against M/s Vatave Health Care, banning the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of its product, Folineuro Syrup (Folinic Acid Syrup). The regulator criticized the product for being marketed as a nutritional supplement with misleading claims concerning its impact on brain function, despite failing to meet the requirements set forth in the Food Safety and Standards Act and the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016.
FSSAI emphasized that these actions were taken to safeguard consumer health and ensure adherence to food safety laws. The authority cautioned that violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, could lead to stringent legal repercussions and penalties for offenders.
