SRINAGAR: A tragic incident occurred on Saturday when a civilian lost his life after inadvertently triggering an “old explosive object” in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir.

The victim has been identified as Zubair Ahmad Bajjad, a resident of the Chandoosa area, located near the Line of Control (LoC). This region has a history of incidents involving old mines, and while the Jammu and Kashmir police have yet to confirm the nature of the object involved, they are actively investigating to ascertain its specifics.

In a statement, the police noted, “A forensic examination of the scene has been conducted, and specialist teams are carrying out thorough sanitisation of the area to rule out the presence of any other unexploded explosive material.” This step underscores the authorities’ commitment to safety and thorough investigation.

The incident took place in a remote Gujjar shelter in the upper stretches of Baramulla. Police officials reported receiving alerts about the explosion around 3 PM, prompting immediate response teams to the site, where they unfortunately discovered Bajjad deceased.

This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in the area, particularly regarding unexploded ordnance leftover from previous conflicts. The local authorities are working diligently to ensure public safety and prevent such occurrences in the future.
