In a tragic incident on Monday afternoon (July 13, 2026), Havildar Mohd Iqbal of the Assam Rifles lost his life, while four other personnel from the paramilitary force sustained injuries due to a bomb explosion in the Chumoukedima district of Nagaland. Officials confirmed that the condition of one of the injured is critical.
The blast was caused by a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) near Sukhovi, according to a Defence spokesperson based in Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. The affected personnel were reportedly part of a convoy heading back to Dimapur, the commercial center of the state, when the explosion occurred. “An operation is in progress,” the spokesperson stated, although further details were not provided.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for Chumoukedima, Nikho Venuh, verified the occurrence of the incident. He announced that a bomb disposal squad had been dispatched to the site to investigate the nature of the explosion. Images from a local social media video depicted community members assisting in evacuating some of the injured individuals using private vehicles.
Officials have not dismissed the possibility that the blast may have been a targeted attack against the paramilitary forces. Just last week, a contingent of Assam Rifles faced an ambush by suspected militants in the Ukhrul district of Manipur, resulting in the deaths of two personnel.
Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio condemned the bombing, labeling it a cowardly act devoid of any societal value. He stated, “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected. Those responsible will be identified and brought to justice. We will not allow such acts to threaten the peace and security of our people.” The chief minister’s remarks underscore a significant commitment to maintaining safety and order in the region.
