In Assam, the districts of Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Charaideo are grappling with severe flooding, affecting **1.92 lakh** residents. Tragically, the death toll has now reached **82**, following two recent fatalities reported on **August 1, 2026**. While the flood situation showed signs of improvement since **July 30, 2026**, when the number of affected individuals surpassed **200,000**, the **Dikhow** and **Dhansiri rivers** remain in a ‘severe flood situation’ in Sivasagar and Numaligarh, prompting authorities to advise residents to avoid these areas.
Approximately **13,000 individuals** are currently housed in **54** relief camps, with **26 relief distribution centers** open to assist **5,384** people. Multiple agencies, including the **National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)** and the **State Disaster Response Force (SDRF)**, are actively engaged in ongoing relief efforts.
In response to the crisis, the state government has initiated discussions with insurance firms and **non-banking financial companies (NBFCs)** to facilitate quicker processing of claims and to offer moratoriums to affected constituents. Emphasis is being placed on the rapid assessment of damages to ensure prompt distribution of funds for essential repairs.
In the latest reports, the number of individuals affected has risen to **192,799**. Among the districts impacted, Charaideo is the hardest hit with **77,456** residents affected, followed by **63,492** in Sivasagar and **34,067** in Jorhat.
Corncerning the urgent recovery efforts, Chief Minister **Himanta Biswa Sarma** announced that the State Cabinet will convene a meeting with both private and government insurance firms on **August 5, 2026**. This meeting aims to expedite the settlement of claims related to vehicle damage, livestock losses, and other properties hit by the floods. On the same day, a meeting with the NBFCs is scheduled to negotiate a moratorium for borrowers in the hardest-hit areas.
Recently, in an important meeting of the **State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC)**, it was determined that a six-month moratorium will be provided to all flood-affected individuals within these districts to ease their financial burdens.
Sarma has also indicated in a social media update that the government has approved over **₹41 crore** under the **PM Surya Ghar** program, which is pending state subsidy for the flood-affected populace. He stated, “As floods affect four districts of Assam, our government stands firmly with every affected family. Along with other forms of assistance, we have approved **₹41.67 crore** under the PM Surya Ghar for **9,289 beneficiaries** in the affected regions.”
Additionally, the Chief Minister instructed the Power Department to accelerate the transfer of funds by **August 4, 2026**, ensuring that the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Ltd deposits the allocated amounts directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, bolstering relief efforts as the state grapples with this humanitarian crisis.
