A staggering 14 lakh cusecs of flood water is currently being discharged into the Bay of Bengal as the water level of the Godavari River reaches the second flood warning threshold at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowleswaram, located in the East Godavari district. In comparison, only about 8,400 cusecs of flood water is being channeled into the Godavari delta.
According to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema District Collector R. Mahesh Kumar, “We have intensified relief operations as per the flood protocol for the second flood warning.” Efforts are being bolstered with the deployment of boats and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema District.
Evacuation Operations Underway
In the Chintoor agency of Polavaram district, evacuation operations are currently in full swing, with 118 relief camps prepared to address the flooding affecting the Sabari and Godavari rivers.
As part of the relief efforts, officials are actively distributing essential commodities to those impacted by the floods. The Chintoor Integrated Tribal Development Agency Project Officer informed The Hindu, “At least 10,000 mosquito nets are ready for distribution, and an additional 9,000 nets will be available by Sunday evening.”
The situation remains critical, and authorities are on high alert as they continue to manage the ongoing flood crisis. Collaboration between local agencies and national forces aims to mitigate the adverse effects on affected communities.
