A Year of Transformation for Turkish Sensation Manifest
In a remarkable transformation from local reality television contestants to international performers, Turkish girl group Manifest recently played a milestone gig at London’s Wembley Arena. This was a pivotal moment for the sextet, underscoring their aspirations to conquer global stages.
The group was formed through the reality show Big5 Türkiye, a platform that shaped its six members into the musical phenomenon they are becoming. Their dynamic K-pop influenced performances and strong Turkish identity set them apart, amassing over six million monthly Spotify listeners.
Ambitious Beginnings and London Debut
Manifest – consisting of main vocalist Sueda Uluca, lead vocalist Lidya Pınar, sub-vocalist Mina Solak, sub-vocalist and rapper Zeynep Sude Oktay, lead dancer Hilal Yelekçi, and main dancer Esin Bahat – first captivated UK audiences with their English-language single TRALALA. Its success was underscored by topping YouTube’s daily music video charts upon release.
During their London visit, the group also filmed their first international music video with a British production team. Despite the stress of stepping beyond familiar territories, the effort paid off, cementing their appeal outside Turkey.
Navigating Challenges and Future Aspirations
Their path has not been without hurdles. Last year, a Turkish court scrutinized the group for alleged public indecency due to their stage outfits and dance routines. The legal scrutiny highlighted ongoing debates about artistic freedom in Turkey.
Nonetheless, Manifest remains undeterred, expressing a keen desire to feature on world-renowned stages such as Coachella. Hilal Yelekçi, the lead dancer, voiced this ambition with enthusiasm, enunciating their intent to manifest future achievements in line with their name.
Staying True to Their Roots
While the UK performance was a significant step, the group is intent on maintaining their Turkish cultural essence in their music. “We aspire to introduce Turkish songs to global audiences,” says group member Sude Oktay, emphasizing their mission to teach fans to sing in Turkish.
A Bright Future Ahead
Meeting international pop icons like Dua Lipa at her Sunny Hill Festival served as both an inspiration and a testament to their growing recognition. Manifest’s journey from Istanbul’s stage to London’s arenas showcases not just their talent, but also their resilience and vision. As they look forward to more groundbreaking performances, Manifest embodies the spirit of multicultural musical innovation.
