Train operations faced significant disruption late on Saturday, August 1, 2026, due to landslips caused by heavy rainfall along the railway line between Yedakumari and Shirivagilu stations in Sakleshpur Taluk. The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m..
In a recent bulletin, the South Western Railway announced that restoration efforts commenced immediately after the landslips. A relief train loaded with essential materials arrived at the affected area to aid in the recovery operations. Additionally, the Railways set up catering services for stranded passengers at Hassan, Subrahmanya Road, Shirivagilu, and Bantwal stations.
According to Manjunath Kanamadi, the Chief Public Relations Officer of South Western Railway, the ongoing restoration is taking longer than anticipated due to continuous landslips in the area.
Impact on Train Services
The disruptions resulted in several train services being halted. The Mangaluru Central–Vijayapura Express (17378), which departed from Mangaluru, was stopped at Shirivagilu at 7:58 p.m. The Murdeshwar–SMVT Bengaluru Express (16586) was halted at Subrahmanya Road at 8:50 p.m. Furthermore, the Kozhikode–KSR Bengaluru Express (16512) was stopped at Neralakatte at 9:56 p.m.
To manage the situation, the Karwar–KSR Bengaluru Express (16596) was rerouted via Mangaluru–Shorapur–Palakkad–Erode–Jolarpet to reach Bengaluru, while the KSR Bengaluru–Karwar Express (16595) was stopped at Hassan railway station.
Service Cancellations on Sunday
On Sunday, August 2, the Railways decided to cancel the Mangaluru Junction–Yesvantpur Express (16540) and Yesvantpur–Mangaluru Junction Express (16575) due to the ongoing threat of landslips.
This situation highlights the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions on essential transportation services, impacting both local commuters and long-distance travelers.
