Shaun Edwards Takes Charge as Argentina’s Defence Coach
In a significant development, renowned rugby defence coach Shaun Edwards has joined the Argentine national rugby team’s coaching staff. Edwards has signed on to bring his expertise to the team until the conclusion of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will be hosted in Australia.
The decision dismisses any notion of Edwards joining the English rugby team under Steve Borthwick’s leadership. However, Edwards will still assist England’s women’s team in a consultancy role before transitioning fully to his position with Argentina, under the leadership of head coach Felipe Contepomi.
Shaun Edwards expressed excitement about his new role, mentioning his longstanding admiration for the talent within Argentine rugby. He is planning to lend his considerable international experience, gathered through his successful runs with teams like France and Wales, to the Argentinians. Edwards has described the Argentine squad as having an impressive quality of players, enhancing his motivation to drive their performance on an international stage.
Previously, Edwards held the position of defence coach for the French men’s team, assisting them in securing three titles in the Six Nations, before stepping down earlier this year. His coaching journey also includes a notable tenure with Wales, achieving four Six Nations triumphs.
Edwards’ new colleague, Mario Ledesma, former head coach and legendary hooker of Argentina, joins to guide the forward pack. Both will start their tenure at the end of October, coinciding with Argentina’s upcoming test matches against rugby giants such as Ireland, Italy, and France in the Nations Championship.
The 2027 Rugby World Cup could pose challenging tests for Argentina, as they have been drawn alongside Fiji, Spain, and Canada. Despite these upcoming trials, Edwards’ arrival brings renewed hope and strategy to help Argentina aim for another successful World Cup run.
Shaun Edwards’ journey in rugby coaching has been marked by pivotal decisions, including turning down an offer to coach England in 2006. He chose to continue with Wasps due to their demanding schedule, following personal family loss. Later roles saw him guiding Wales instead of leading England’s Saxons.
The rugby world keenly watches as Edwards embarks on this fresh challenge, hoping his seasoned expertise will greatly benefit the Argentina Pumas in their international campaigns.
