Padel’s Rapid Growth Overtakes Tennis in England

Over the past three years, the landscape of racquet sports in England has dramatically shifted as padel gains widespread popularity and tennis facilities see a decline. Nearly 200 tennis courts have disappeared, replaced by an impressive surge of padel courts.

New data from Sport England highlights this evolving trend, revealing that the number of tennis courts saw a reduction for the first time in over two decades. Since 2023, England has seen the closure of 183 tennis courts, while padel courts have expanded significantly, boasting over 2,200 installations up from just 382.

Factors Driving Padel’s Appeal

The sport of padel, often described as a blend between tennis and squash, is gaining traction due to its accessibility and simplicity for newcomers. Played on smaller courts, padel involves underarm serves and unique scoring, which many find less challenging to master compared to traditional tennis. Bee Armstrong, a London-based project manager, commented on discovering padel after a back injury curtailed her hockey pursuits. “It’s easier on the body and growing rapidly,” she noted, appreciating its accessibility and social aspects.

The Impact on Tennis

Despite the emergence of over 2,000 new padel venues, tennis courts still vastly outnumber them, maintaining a ratio of 11:1. However, some sports complexes have clearly earmarked padel as their primary focus, directly replacing tennis courts with this trendy alternative. The net loss of tennis venues does not necessarily indicate a decline in interest; the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) emphasized increased participation, thanks in part to rejuvenated park tennis courts and successful youth engagement initiatives.

While tennis continues to hold a significant presence across the country, the rise of padel illustrates a shift toward more versatile and perhaps more communal sports activities.
