NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful message on Sunday, cautioning the youth against the perils of substance abuse. He emphasized that while drugs might offer a fleeting high, they ultimately lead to significant lows in both personal and professional aspects of life. During the launch of the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ (Campaign for Drug-Free Youth for Developed India), Modi urged families to avoid hiding addiction under the guise of social prestige and instead seek help from experts, promoting open communication with children.
Modi called for a shift in societal attitudes towards addiction, stating that those who bravely confront their substance use issues are not weak but rather ‘real warriors.’ He highlighted the need to respect and support individuals who overcome their addictions. “Their incredible courage is their true identity,” he remarked during a virtual event that connected chief ministers, governors, spiritual leaders, and many youths across the nation.
As India aspires to become a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), Modi underscored the vital necessity for the youth to maintain both physical and mental well-being, steering clear of destructive habits like drug use. He affirmed that a supportive community, alongside practices such as yoga and meditation, is crucial in helping individuals resist addiction.
“Even if a young person has mistakenly fallen into the trap of addiction, it absolutely does not mean that all doors are closed for them,” he stated. Society should welcome and support these individuals, providing them with another chance at life.
The issue of substance abuse remains a pressing concern, particularly in regions like the north-east and Punjab, where it has become a focal point for political discourse ahead of the elections scheduled for early next year. Modi pointed out that hostile nations often exploit drug supplies as part of their terror strategies, fully aware that the youth represent the future of the country.
The awareness campaign will span 100 weeks, with activities planned every Sunday. These will include various cultural programs, sports events, meditation sessions, and spiritual initiatives aimed at spreading the message of de-addiction.
Addressing the emotional toll on families, Modi remarked that relatives endure daily heartache as they watch their loved ones succumb to addiction. He also assured the public that stringent action is being taken against drug traffickers nationwide, with a significant increase in arrests and the confiscation of drugs valued in the thousands of crores of rupees.
