In a recent statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the controversial language used by some individuals during the protests at Jantar Mantar, which occurred on July 25. In a video shared on his social media platforms, he emphasized that such disrespectful language does not belong in a civilized society, highlighting that the remarks were directed not only at him but also insulted his late mother.
Mr. Modi reflected on the errors of youth, suggesting that while mistakes can happen, they can also be acknowledged and corrected. “I understand the anger in our society. There is a cultural shock about our daughters using such language. This is the time to hug them and show them the right path… I want to forgive them,” he stated.
Appeal for Restraint and Guidance
While acknowledging the emotions running high, the Prime Minister called for restraint, emphasizing that simply punishing these young individuals will not lead to constructive solutions. “The children are ours, and we have to show them the right path, even if it is difficult with people who have been misled,” he said.
This message was particularly timely following the filing of a zero FIR in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, against Ruchika Singh, a 25-year-old woman accused of using expletives against Mr. Modi during the protests.
Opposition’s Reaction
In response to Modi’s comments, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, criticized the Prime Minister, asserting, “PM Modi and Amit Shah — you cannot threaten Gen Z into silence.” He warned the Prime Minister to consider how his actions may affect the younger generation, labeling him as a representative of India’s past.
