NEW DELHI: On Saturday, the Ladakh Police took significant action by registering a zero FIR against social media influencer Yogesh Parmar. This decision stems from the circulation of a Facebook video that allegedly includes objectionable remarks directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah. In a procedural move, the case has been transferred to Karnataka for further investigation, according to police officials.
The FIR was lodged at the Leh police station following a written complaint that indicated the Facebook video contained remarks deemed “highly objectionable, hateful and offensive” toward the Home Minister.
Details of the Charges
The case has been registered under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Specifically, it falls under:
- Section 197(1)(d)—pertaining to acts against national integration,
- Section 352—related to insult intended to provoke a breach of peace,
- Section 353(1)—dealing with public mischief.
These offences may lead to punishments ranging from two to three years of imprisonment, along with fines, or both, depending on the exact legal provisions invoked.
Public Order Concerns
The FIR cited the complainant’s concerns that the video’s content could potentially promote hostility and disrupt public order and communal harmony. It stated, “It is alleged that the content is likely to promote hostility, disturb public order and harmony by inciting resentment among the public.” Officials noted that the allegations indicate a prima facie case for a cognisable offence that warrants further legal action.
As the incidents related to the video occur within the jurisdiction of the Devaraja Police Station in Mysuru City, Karnataka, the Leh police opted to register a zero FIR, allowing them to initiate action regardless of the location of the alleged incident.
