The leader of the Jewish Greens, Vivien Lichtenstein, has publicly urged Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party, to step down. This call comes amid rising tensions within the party concerning a controversial decision equating Zionism with racism, which was recently approved at a Green Party conference. The contentious policy not only equates Zionism with racism but also proposes replacing Israel with a single Palestinian state.

Leadership Under Fire

Polanski’s decision not to attend the recent debate and vote on this policy has drawn sharp criticism from both within and outside the party. Former Green leader Caroline Lucas expressed disappointment over Polanski’s absence during the crucial vote. She stressed that the party leader’s presence was vital to address and challenge such divisive motions.

In the aftermath of a byelection in Holborn and St Pancras, where Polanski finished second, the criticism has only intensified. Many party members and onlookers have noted that he could have voted online, a possibility he did not utilize, raising questions about his priorities during the election campaign.

Internal Party Discord

Lichtenstein emphasized her frustration regarding Polanski’s claims of working with Jewish members within the party. She stated that there appears to be a lack of communication with the Jewish Greens committee, casting doubt on his purported collaborations.

Additionally, Jonathan Bartley, a former co-leader of the Green Party, has called for Polanski to acknowledge his mistakes publicly. Bartley believes that Polanski’s leadership has failed to unite the party on this sensitive issue, leading to an increasingly toxic environment.

Looking Ahead

Polanski will face a routine re-election process soon, as Green Party leaders serve two-year terms, giving him limited time to address these concerns and potentially mend fences within the party. Members and supporters alike are eager to see how he will navigate this leadership challenge amid internal dissent.
