The tragic incident involving fish workers in Thiruvananthapuram took a somber turn as the body of one of the missing individuals was recovered on Sunday morning, August 2, 2026. The deceased, identified as Freemon, aged 28 and a resident of Anchuthengu, was found following extensive search efforts.
Freemon’s body was discovered approximately 23 kilometers from the site of the accident in Kannanthura, after the fishing boat he was on capsized near the Muthalapozhi estuary on the night of July 31, 2026. The search operation was a collective effort involving the Indian Coast Guard, Coastal Police, and the Marine Enforcement Wing, with the recovery taking place amidst ongoing adverse weather conditions.
Another fisher from Anchuthengu, Shijin, aged 32, remains missing. The boat, which was carrying four fish workers, encountered strong currents, leading to its capsizing. Two other crew members, identified as Smith and Jose, managed to survive the ordeal and swim to safety.
Protests Erupt Amid Search Efforts
On Saturday, August 1, local fisherfolk and family members of the missing workers expressed their frustrations through protests near Anchuthengu. They accused authorities of insufficient search operations and called for more robust efforts to locate the missing individuals. Tensions escalated as protesters blocked roads near the Coastal Police Station.
Additionally, two other fish workers, Antony and John, who had ventured from the Vizhinjam coast on the same evening, are also unaccounted for, raising concerns about the safety of fishers in these treacherous waters.
Government Response and Ongoing Operations
C.P. John, the Transport Minister responsible for coordinating flood-related responses in the Thiruvananthapuram district, stated that search operations would continue actively. On August 1, the Indian Navy utilized a Garuda helicopter for aerial searches to facilitate the rescue efforts, which are set to carry on into August 2.
