Families in Russia Demand Answers after Ukraine’s 2024 Incursion

In the aftermath of Ukraine’s 2024 military operation in Russia’s Kursk region, Russian families find themselves in a state of uncertainty, desperate for information about missing loved ones. Among those affected is Lyubov, who recalls last speaking to her mother shortly after the incursion began. Frustration has replaced her former belief in the Russian state, as she, along with many other Russians, criticizes the government’s response to the crisis.

When Ukrainian forces began their incursion more than two years ago, Russian state television attempted to reassure citizens that the situation was under control. However, more than 300 individuals remain unaccounted for, according to local authorities. These figures only intensify the grievances of families like Lyubov’s, who urge for a more transparent accounting of the missing.

Efforts to seek help through official channels have yielded little progress. Many like Lyubov reached out to organizations including the Red Cross and local government departments but encountered silence. In early 2025, the Russian human rights commissioner released a report listing 517 missing persons from Kursk, muddling the names of those searching with the missing. This move further agitated families who already felt marginalized and overlooked.

Throughout the conflict, communication lines in the affected area were disrupted. Ukrainian forces had captured significant parts of the territory in an attempt to divert Russian troops from the eastern front. This incursion resulted in significant humanitarian concerns, with Russians pleading with both Ukrainian and Russian presidents, as well as the United Nations, for a humanitarian corridor. Unfortunately, relief efforts stalled amidst ongoing clashes.

The situation has driven many families to take action. Some residents began documenting observed casualties and potential burial sites. Eventually, lists containing approximately 1,000 names emerged as a result of these grassroots efforts, providing a semblance of solace and agency amidst chaos.

As battles continued into late 2024, Russian forces intensified efforts to reclaim control over the region. One tragic event involved the village of Darino, which saw heavy fighting and significant destruction. During one evacuation, Lyubov learned that her mother, who had stayed through the early turmoil, had died from a head injury.

The ongoing conflict has left families grappling with loss and a lack of closure. They continue to fight for recognition and answers, striving to rebuild their lives after the disruptions caused by a conflict devoid of clear resolution.
