NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) demonstration at Jantar Mantar against examination irregularities marked its 24th day on Monday, garnering support from prominent leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Among those present were Atishi, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, MLA Kuldeep Kumar, and former Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi.
In a post shared on X, Atishi remarked, “Met @Wangchuk66 at Jantar Mantar as his fast enters the 16th day. Even though his health is deteriorating, his spirit remains strong. He is committed to fighting for the youth of this country. Power to you Sonam and the young cockroaches.” This statement highlights the spirit and dedication of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is facing health challenges as he continues his indefinite hunger strike.
On Monday, Wangchuk’s health further declined, with medical reports revealing a drop in his blood pressure and a total weight loss of 8.2 kg since the initiation of his fast. His situation is being closely monitored as he strives to raise awareness about the pressing issues surrounding the education system.
Additionally, on Sunday, Samajwadi Party MP Pushpendra Saroj and former Kerala Health Minister K K Shailaja visited the protest site, expressing their solidarity with the CJP’s cause. Shailaja emphasized, “We are all here to express our solidarity with the protest conducted by the CJP. It is on an important issue. We want accountability in examinations. We seek a fair entrance examination system in our country.” The call for accountability resonates widely, given the current climate surrounding examination integrity.
Since June 20, the CJP has been vocal in its demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations of irregularities in the competitive examinations, particularly related to the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. In a significant development, the group has declared a planned march to Parliament on July 20 as part of their ongoing protests.
Wangchuk’s participation highlights the intersection of activism and politics in this protest, as multiple political leaders and public figures lend their voices to the cause. Opposition parties continue to amplify calls for Pradhan’s resignation, citing serious lapses in managing competitive examinations and concerns regarding the National Testing Agency (NTA).
In related news, a Delhi court has extended the judicial custody of 13 individuals connected with the NEET-UG paper leak case until July 24, illustrating the ongoing legal ramifications of this issue.
