Turner Prize Winner Envisions New Art Hub in Ulverston

Renowned artist and Turner Prize recipient, Keith Tyson, is set to embark on a personal and cultural venture in his hometown of Ulverston, Cumbria. He recently unveiled plans to transform an old Mercedes-Benz garage into a dynamic centre dedicated to art and education.

Tyson acquired the derelict showroom located on Princes Street, with a vision of converting it into a venue that offers exhibitions, educational opportunities, and fosters community interaction. This initiative springs from Tyson’s experiences growing up in the area, where his passion for art was kindled largely through local libraries rather than galleries. His project intends to bridge that gap for the younger generation, providing them access and exposure to art in ways he never experienced.

“Growing up, there weren’t many art venues around,” Tyson explains. “This project aims to give the youth a chance to engage with art and cultivate a similar passion.”

The revitalization effort is currently in nascent stages, but Tyson is enthusiastic about the space’s future. He envisions the centre not just as a local fixture but as a significant arts destination for northern England.

The artist plans for the centre to house exhibitions, a reference library, and host educational programs catering to both school groups and the general community.

A Commitment to Community and Culture

Adrian Newnham, Tyson’s former art teacher, expressed his support for the project. Reflecting on Tyson’s talent, Newnham recalled discovering his artistic potential at a young age, saying, “Keith was exceptionally gifted, and it’s heartening to see him giving back to the community that nurtured him.” He believes this arts centre will elevate Ulverston’s already vibrant cultural scene.

Known for his integration of art, science, and technology through diverse mediums like painting, sculpture, and installations, Tyson’s new project marks a significant contribution to the cultural landscape.

Ulverston, celebrated for its lively festivals and artistic buzz, stands to gain significantly by hosting this upcoming arts venue. The project promises to enrich the town’s artistic stature and serve as a cultural beacon.
