In a recent operation, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended at least nine Indian fishermen on Thursday, seizing their trawler for allegedly engaging in illegal fishing within Sri Lankan territorial waters. This incident reflects the ongoing tensions surrounding fishing rights between the two nations.
The fishermen were reportedly caught north of Talaimannar after crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line. According to an official statement from the Navy, the arrests occurred on Wednesday evening when more than 50 Indian fishing trawlers were detected infringing into Sri Lankan waters near Iranativu.
The seized trawler, along with the fishermen, was subsequently handed over to the Fisheries Inspector in Mannar for further legal action. This marks the latest episode in a series of similar incidents that continue to strain relations between India and Sri Lanka.
