NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs has formally expressed its grave concerns regarding the ongoing assaults on vessels transporting Indian seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly focusing on incidents involving the MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry detailed that both ships were under transit in the critical waterway when they came under attack, jeopardizing the safety of their crews. A total of 30 Indian seafarers were aboard the two vessels, which collectively had 46 crew members.
Tragically, of the 12 Indian nationals on MT Al Bahiyah, one lost his life while another sustained injuries. Meanwhile, from the 18 Indian personnel aboard MT Mombasa, 9 suffered injuries, with 2 reported to be in a serious condition. The ministry conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed hopes for a swift recovery for the injured. Indian diplomatic missions in the UAE are actively monitoring the developments and coordinating with UAE authorities to provide necessary support to the affected seafarers.
Additionally, the Indian government summoned the deputy chief of mission from the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi, where a strong protest was lodged concerning these attacks. The ministry firmly condemned the violence aimed at seafarers and highlighted the importance of maintaining safe navigation in international waters, including the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.
The statement further underscored the ministry’s serious concern regarding the resurgence of hostilities in the West Asia region. It called for an immediate halt to violence and a renewed commitment to dialogue and diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace and security.
Furthermore, the ministry emphasized that attacks on commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure must come to an end to ensure the restoration of free and unobstructed navigation in accordance with international law, facilitating safe commerce in the region.
