NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), escalated his criticism of the central government regarding the implementation of E20 fuel on Saturday. He urged that consumers should have the option to choose between conventional petrol and the ethanol-blended alternative at fuel stations.
In a show of dissent, Kejriwal announced a rally to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on August 3, intending to submit public petitions opposing the government’s fuel policy.
Speaking at a town hall meeting focused on E20 fuel held at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi, Kejriwal alleged that the government has been inconsistent in its stance on the matter. He remarked, “The government is blaming opposition parties for the E20 fuel issue, claiming it to be our agenda, yet now BJP leaders are also criticizing it.”
Kejriwal expressed concern that ethanol blending would not only hike costs but also pose challenges for both consumers and farmers. “Ethanol is more expensive than petrol, and farmers are struggling as it contaminates water and soil; the government is imposing E20 on citizens in line with the India-US trade agreement,” he asserted, suggesting that India’s ethanol imports would surge fivefold compared to last year with the rollout of E20 fuel.
The former Chief Minister of Delhi mentioned that he would start collecting petitions at noon on Monday, leading a march with approximately 100 supporters towards Lok Kalyan Marg. He has also called for lower tariffs on E20-blended petrol and a general reduction in petrol prices.
Kejriwal further urged the central government to disclose the study that supports the adoption of E20 fuel. “The Centre claims that studies show E20 does not harm vehicles. I urge them to share that report,” he stated.
The meeting attracted attendees from various states, allowing participants to voice their experiences and concerns regarding E20 fuel, as well as issues they have encountered with their vehicles.
