PM Modi Inaugurates Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Andhra Pradesh

NEW DELHI: On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport located in Bhogapuram, within the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. This ambitious endeavor, costing nearly Rs 5,000 crore, is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming North Andhra into a prominent economic and industrial hub.

The ceremony was marked by a magnificent reception, featuring a performance by approximately 13,500 tribal women showcasing the traditional Dhimsa dance. The airport’s surroundings were beautifully decorated with representations of Andhra Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage, including the celebrated Etikoppaka artwork and various motifs that illustrate the state’s geographical identity.

PM Modi was welcomed by several dignitaries, including the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu. After enjoying the Dhimsa dance performance, Modi officially inaugurated the airport.

Airport Details and Future Plans

Developed by the GMR Group, the airport is named in honor of freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju. In its initial phase, the airport is designed to accommodate 6 million passengers each year, with future expansion plans aimed at boosting this capacity to 40 million passengers annually. The commencement of commercial flight operations is slated for August 17.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh envisions the airport as a strategic driver for industrial progression, job creation, export promotion, skill development, and enhanced connectivity across North Andhra.

Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony

Following the airport inauguration, Chief Minister Naidu honored PM Modi with a traditional shawl before he laid the foundation stone. Modi also inaugurated and dedicated various developmental projects valued at over Rs 17,900 crore. During the visit, Naidu along with Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu provided PM Modi with insights regarding the airport’s features and future expansion initiatives.
