The Indian government is taking bold steps to enhance its renewable energy portfolio by significantly increasing the Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FSPV) capacity from the current 700 megawatts (MW) to an impressive 5,000 MW. As part of this initiative, on Friday, the Cabinet approved a comprehensive scheme worth Rs 5,070 crore aimed at advancing the development of floating solar projects, which will also include storage systems with a minimum capacity of two hours.
This initiative is designed to utilize existing water reservoirs, allowing for the establishment of solar plants without competing for valuable land resources. This strategic move not only promotes clean energy generation but also optimizes the use of available natural resources.
States with High Floating Solar Potential
According to the National Institute of Solar Energy, Maharashtra leads the country with the highest potential for floating solar power, boasting a remarkable capacity of 16.3 gigawatts (GW). Following closely are Madhya Pradesh with 14.9 GW and Karnataka with 13.7 GW.
This expansion in floating solar capacity is expected to play a crucial role in meeting India’s renewable energy targets, aligning with its commitment to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy solutions. By harnessing solar energy in this manner, the government aims to create more environmentally friendly power generation options that can contribute to the country’s energy security.
