A harrowing incident unfolded near the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland, as three teenagers lost their lives when their vehicle plunged into the River Wear. This tragic accident took place on an otherwise uneventful afternoon.

Authorities from Northumbria Police reported that the unfortunate event transpired shortly before 1:30 PM BST. A black Audi A3 veered off the roadway at Panns Bank, subsequently entering the river below. Among the passengers, a 17-year-old boy narrowly escaped with his life, managing to reach the shore. Presently, he is receiving medical attention at a local hospital for injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

The bodies of the other three occupants – two teenage boys and a girl – were recovered from the waters by emergency services who responded swiftly to the scene.

Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie from Sunderland voiced his deep sympathies, stating it was a “truly tragic event” and extended condolences to the families affected, as well as friends and others touched by the disaster. The investigation to uncover how the car departed the road is still in its early stages.
