Tillis Criticizes Trump’s Texas Endorsement

In a political landscape marked by loyalty to former President Donald Trump, Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has maintained his reputation as a vocal critic. This time, the controversy revolves around Trump’s decision to endorse Ken Paxton in the Texas Republican Senate primary, bypassing long-serving Senator John Cornyn.

During an interview on CNN’s ‘State of the Union’, Tillis did not hold back on his disapproval. He asserted that Trump’s choice to support Paxton was a ‘colossal mistake,’ emphasizing the risky nature of this endorsement for the Republican Party’s hold on the Senate seat. Tillis pointed out that the financial and political efforts necessary to back Paxton could have been avoided if Cornyn had secured the nomination.

Trump’s Influence and Paxton’s Challenges

Former President Trump, unwavering in his support for Paxton, highlighted Paxton’s allegiance to the Make America Great Again (MAGA) agenda. However, the race is not without its complications. Paxton, who emerged victorious over Cornyn, is now facing Democratic contender James Talarico in the upcoming general elections.

Talarico, a Democratic pastor and state representative, is known for his populist views and is working to break a decades-long Republican stronghold in Texas. The outcome of this election could redefine the political landscape of the state, with Talarico potentially becoming the first Democrat in over 30 years to win statewide office.

Underlying Political Tensions

Paxton’s political career has not been without controversy. He faced impeachment in 2023 on corruption charges before being acquitted. Additionally, accusations of felony securities fraud led to a case dismissal after a pretrial agreement in 2024. His personal life also drew attention when his wife, Angela Paxton, filed for divorce in 2025.

Tillis remains one of the few Republicans openly challenging Trump. Earlier this year, he defended the NATO alliance against Trump’s foreign policy remarks and called for leadership changes following controversial actions by immigration officials.

This latest critique by Tillis underscores a growing division within the Republican Party as it grapples with Trump’s influence and the implications of his endorsements.
