In a timely boost for England’s rugby squad, fly-half Fin Smith has been declared fit and will take the lead in their opening autumn Test against Australia this Sunday. After recovering from a calf injury that saw him leave the pitch in a recent club match, Smith is ready to steer the team at Twickenham.

Smith’s inclusion is particularly significant given his impressive performance during the Six Nations, where he asserted himself as a key figure by overtaking George Ford in the fly-half rankings. The 24-year-old has now been confirmed to start against the Wallabies, maintaining his position in the squad despite fitness concerns stemming from Northampton’s recent defeat by Leicester.

Joining Smith in the starting lineup is flanker Ben Curry, who is making a welcome return to the Test arena after a prolonged absence due to injury. Despite his twin brother Tom Curry’s recent setback, Ben is expected to play a crucial role in battling Australia’s breakdown experts Fraser McReight and Carlo Tizzano.

Smith will have familiar company on the field with Northampton teammate Tommy Freeman, who will be present on the wing as a strategic attacking option. George Furbank, who shares playing experience with Smith at club level, will feature at full-back, offering tactical versatility by potentially stepping in at first receiver.

The squad sees some other notable selections. Alex Coles has been chosen for the second row, taking the spot over rival George Martin. Meanwhile, Henry Slade’s selection at outside centre means there is no place for Joe Marchant or Will Joseph in the starting lineup.

In the front row, Fin Baxter, still finding his feet after a lengthy injury-induced hiatus, has been named as the starting loose-head prop. He will later be joined by Ellis Genge and Will Stuart off the bench, both of whom add depth and experience to the front row options.

Anticipation surrounds Exeter’s back row forward Greg Fisilau, who might earn his first cap from the bench and offer a fresh dynamic to England’s play. The strategic choices made by the England coaching staff point towards a focused game plan aimed at countering the Wallabies’ strengths and showcasing a robust performance at Twickenham.
