Early Sunday morning, residents in Crawley woke to an unexpected water crisis when a burst water main left areas flooded and interrupted the water supply to approximately 9,000 homes. Southern Water responded by acknowledging the severity of the leak, describing it as ‘significant’ and immediately initiating repairs.

The burst occurred around Southgate Roundabout, leading to the closure of several major roads, including Southgate Avenue, Crawley Avenue, and parts of the A23. This disruption affected not only residential areas but also businesses, with the County Mall shopping centre having to temporarily close its doors due to the lack of a water supply.

The incident has prompted action from Southern Water, who set up bottled water stations to assist in meeting the immediate needs of affected residents. However, for some locals, like 82-year-old John Boulton, having to purchase bottled water has been an unexpected expense. “It’s quite frustrating to deal with,” he commented after spending £22 on bottled water.

In addition to impacting households, the situation created logistical challenges for drivers and delivery services passing through the area. Martin Lawrence, a delivery driver, encountered the flood during his early morning route. “I had never seen such a high volume of water,” he shared, describing the scene with water stretching across various roads and entering underpasses.
