The Maharashtra government announced on June 27, 2026, that it has postponed the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) 2026 amid serious allegations of a “paper leak.” The examination was originally scheduled for June 28, 2026, expecting approximately six lakh candidates to participate across 1,728 centres in the state. The government emphasized that the postponement aims to ensure a transparent examination process, as stated in their press release.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called for a comprehensive investigation into this matter. Opposition leaders are criticizing the government, demanding accountability and a thorough inquiry.

“Why is the government not capable of holding a single exam transparently? Why is it playing with the lives of our youth? If the government does not act strictly, we will hit the streets,”

said Harshawardhan Sapkal, the president of Maharashtra Congress.

The decision to delay the exam was made just a day before it was set to take place, following a probe initiated by the Bhiwandi Police in Thane district. During the investigation, officials discovered individuals in possession of materials containing questions similar to those in the TET paper.

Officials from the Maharashtra State Examination Council (MSEC) were promptly summoned to verify the authenticity of the seized material. During the assessment, it was revealed that certain questions belonged to the same pool as those in the TET exam. A case has been formally registered at the Bhiwandi police station concerning this incident.

MSEC Deputy Commissioner Priya Shinde mentioned that organizing an examination of this magnitude typically requires about three weeks. Candidates who have already registered will not need to re-register, and no registration fee will be imposed on them as they are not at fault.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against three individuals, with police furthering their investigation. Shinde assured that strict actions will be taken against anyone found culpable in this case.

The Chief Minister has also established a Special Investigation Team (SIT), under Thane Joint CP Panjabrao Ugale, to delve into the paper leak scandal. Furthermore, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse and DGP Sadanand Date have been instructed to enforce stern measures against the offenders.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed that the culprits must face charges under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), emphasizing the need for strong legal action against those involved.
