Camden’s Sagal Abdi-Wali Vies for Holborn and St Pancras Seat

Sagal Abdi-Wali, the leader of Camden Council, is preparing to contest for the parliamentary seat in Holborn and St Pancras. This opportunity arose following Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to vacate his position as an MP. Starmer, who previously served as prime minister, announced his resignation on 1 September in order to concentrate on international responsibilities.

Abdi-Wali has been actively involved in local governance, serving as a councillor for Camden Square since 2022 and leading the council since May. She expresses deep gratitude for the trust placed in her by local Labour members. “Growing up here, this is where my family found refuge and optimism during challenging times,” remarked Abdi-Wali, reflecting on her journey.

The Green Party is also looking to field a strong candidate, with London Assembly member Zack Polanski competing for the nomination against local councillor Hamza Chowdhury. Chowdhury has voiced concerns about the need for a committed representative who remains engaged beyond election periods. Polanski, however, confidently disputes this characterization, emphasizing his strong connection to the community.

The Holborn and St Pancras constituency has been under Labour’s influence since its creation in 1983, consistently receiving over 40% of votes in general elections. In the last election, Starmer secured nearly 49% of the vote, with the Greens and other parties trailing behind.

In recent local elections, the Green Party made notable advances in Camden, contributing to a dynamic political environment as parties vie for influence in this key constituency.
