The ceremonial farewell for PC Matthew Blades, a police officer tragically killed in a collision on the A66, will take place today in Hartlepool. PC Blades, aged 37, was involved in a fatal crash alongside his colleague PC Tom Clough, 38, following a collision with a Volkswagen Passat on 22 August. The accident occurred as a consequence of a police pursuit of the vehicle which was linked to prior criminal activities, though the pursuit was called off moments before the tragedy.

The accident also claimed the lives of five young boys, raising the death toll to seven. As per arrangements, several roads in Hartlepool will be temporarily closed to accommodate the solemn procession and service, reflecting the gravity of the loss felt by the Cleveland Police community.

A Community in Mourning

Lauren Somerville, the Cleveland Police Federation Chair, conveyed the overwhelming sense of void and silence in the wake of PC Blades’ passing, highlighting his unique ability to bring joy and laughter into the lives of those around him. She described him as a cherished friend, family member, and colleague, whose absence is acutely felt across the force.

Cleveland officers are expected to line the streets in full uniform to honor their fallen brother, embodying unity and resilience amidst the sorrow. The atmosphere is expected to be deeply emotional as the police community and public alike remember and celebrate PC Blades’ service and personal contributions.

Remembering a Life of Service

Before joining the ranks of the police force, PC Blades was an English teacher at Carmel College in Darlington, where he was remembered for his intelligence, warmth, and commitment to nurturing young minds. His former colleagues and students at the school remember him for his generous spirit and dedication.

While PC Blades’ family and community are grappling with his untimely loss, the funeral serves as a poignant reminder of the noble but perilous duties police officers undertake regularly. The community’s condolences continue to pour in, with tributes echoing PC Blades’ legacy of dedication and bravery.

As the mourners gather to pay their respects, PC Blades is remembered not just as an officer but as a loving father and a devoted family man, whose laughter and presence will be missed beyond measure.
