A warm and sunny Sunday afternoon in Hyderabad took a drastic turn on August 2, as dark clouds rolled in shortly after 4 p.m., leading to unexpected showers across various parts of the city. This sudden shift in weather took many commuters by surprise, resulting in minor flooding at several locations.
The weather transformed rapidly in the late afternoon with heavy clouds overshadowing the city. Rainfall was reported across central, western, and northern Hyderabad, catching many motorists and pedestrians off guard who had ventured out during what began as a clear day.
Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) revealed measured rainfall amounts by 6 p.m. Keesara recorded a significant 18.3 mm of rain, closely followed by Khairatabad at 17.8 mm. Other notable areas included Banjara Hills with 14.3 mm, Gunfoundry at 13 mm, and Masab Tank at 12.3 mm. Shaikpet saw 12 mm, while Gachibowli received 10.5 mm. In addition, Safilguda recorded 9.5 mm and Filmnagar received 9 mm of rainfall.
In response to the unexpected downpour, traffic police from the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri commissionerates were deployed to major intersections to facilitate smooth traffic flow and mitigate congestion. Additionally, teams from the Disaster Response Force (DRF) of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) were activated to address the waterlogging issues on affected stretches.
This event underscores the need for residents to stay alert to changing weather conditions, especially during this time of year when sudden rain is common. Though many enjoyed the initial sunny afternoon, such swift changes serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Hyderabad’s monsoon season.
