NEW DELHI: Lovlina Borgohain, a silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games and a prominent boxer from Assam, expressed her disappointment upon discovering that a map displayed at an Indian restaurant in Glasgow excluded the Northeast region. The restaurant’s management acknowledged the oversight and promised to rectify the situation.
The incident occurred as the Indian boxing team gathered for a celebratory dinner at Mister Singh’s India, also known as The Home of Curry, after achieving a historic milestone of ten medals—seven gold and three silver—at the Commonwealth Games.
During her visit, Lovlina observed that the restaurant’s branding featured a partially incomplete map of India that omitted the Northeast. She proactively brought this issue to the restaurant’s management.
In an interaction with the restaurant staff, Lovlina commented on the emotional impact of the omission: “Please don’t take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our North East is missing. Yes, even outside, the map that’s displayed has cut off the North East. As someone from the North East, that really hurts us. That’s all I wanted to say. Please keep this in mind next time. Thank you so much,” she remarked.
Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), who was also present at the restaurant, clarified that there was no confrontation and that the matter was handled diplomatically. “There was no confrontation. It was an aberration and we pointed that out, me and Lovlina. They accepted their mistake and assured us that it will be corrected,” Singh stated to PTI.
Mister Singh’s India has gained popularity as a premier Indian dining destination in Glasgow, having welcomed several international sports teams and dignitaries over the years.
Lovelina attained her silver medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist narrowly lost the final to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree by a tight 4-1 split decision, thus missing her chance to secure a gold medal.
This silver medal serves as Lovlina’s first at the Commonwealth Games, following her earlier exits in the 2018 Gold Coast and Birmingham 2022 events.
India’s boxing team has marked an unprecedented achievement at the Commonwealth Games, capturing seven gold and three silver medals. Overall, India garnered a total of 35 medals at the Glasgow Games, consisting of 11 gold, 16 silver, and eight bronze, securing the fourth position in the medal tally.
