Green Party’s Mothin Ali Tied to Rental Properties
The Green Party deputy leader, Mothin Ali, has come under scrutiny due to his involvement with rental properties, despite his party’s clear stance against private landlords. Ali is associated with two buy-to-let properties through a business he controls, raising questions about potential conflicts with party policy.
Ali’s company, MA Holdings, acquired two properties in Leeds in 2022 and 2025, preceding the Green Party’s proposal to phase out private landlordism by 2025. The party introduced a motion titled “Abolish landlords,” targeting the challenges of the current rental market and advocating for increased council housing as a solution to the housing crisis.
Documentation from Companies House lists Ali as the sole director holding substantial control over MA Holdings. Interestingly, the properties were secured with buy-to-let mortgages, hinting at intentions for rental. The Green Party clarified that Ali’s actions were driven by familial responsibilities involving vulnerable family members, not personal profit.
While the company’s activities suggest commercial real estate dealings, Ali maintains his commitment to Green policies. These policies aim to institute more regulations on rental operations, including potential rent caps and curtailing buy-to-let mortgages to align with the party’s vision of expanding social housing.
Ali’s support for the Green agenda remains steadfast despite personal connections to the real estate sector. The policy seeks not only to regulate landlords more closely but also to empower tenants, aligning with the broader objective of reducing reliance on privately rented homes while boosting social housing inventory.
The controversy underscores a broader debate within the UK about landlord practices and housing accessibility. Ali, amidst the scrutiny, champions the Green Party strategy, which he believes is vital to addressing the housing shortage and improving tenant rights.
