The vibrancy of the Telugu language, culture, and traditions sprang to life in Baltimore, Maryland, as thousands of Telugu individuals from across the United States gathered for the 19th American Telugu Association (ATA) conference. This three-day event not only celebrated their shared heritage but also aimed to strengthen ties with their roots.
Families who have settled in the U.S., along with their children born and raised there, gathered to reconnect with their cultural identity through traditional dance, music, and authentic Telugu cuisine. The conference serves as a bridging platform for generations to celebrate and embrace their roots.
Inaugural Session and Special Guests
The conference commenced with the presence of Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor, Aruna Miller, originally from Hyderabad, enriching the celebrations with her special connection to the community.
A group of dignitaries from India also attended the inaugural session, including Gutta Sukhender Reddy, Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council, and Jupally Krishna Rao, the Tourism Minister of Telangana. Other notable attendees included MLAs T. Rammohan Reddy, Yennem Srinivas Reddy, and Manohar Reddy, along with N. Ramchander Rao, the Telangana BJP president.
Entertainment and Future Guests
The event featured renowned film personalities such as veteran actor Rajendra Prasad and playback singer Sunitha Upadrashta, who contributed to the glamour of the opening ceremony. Organizers noted that several other film stars are expected to participate in subsequent sessions.
Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, is also scheduled to join the celebrations on Saturday, further emphasizing the event’s significance.
Honoring Contributions and Achievements
During the event, Mr. Sukhender Reddy recognized the Telugu diaspora for their efforts in preserving their language and culture despite living abroad, as well as for their contributions to the development of both Telugu States.
The ATA presented Lifetime Achievement Awards and additional honors to distinguished individuals across various fields such as community service, science, technology, performing arts, sports, medicine, entrepreneurship, business, and journalism. Notably, Ravikanth Reddy Ramasayam received recognition for excellence in journalism.
Other awardees included Kiran Chukkapalli, Sashi Gundala, Dr. Ravinder Regatte, and many more, showcasing the array of talents and contributions from the community.
ATA’s Impact on the Telugu Community
The inaugural session was attended by ATA President Jayanth Challa, National Coordinator Sharath Vemula, Co-Coordinator Zeenath Kundar, and several past presidents. Mr. Vemula highlighted the ATA’s significant contributions to the Telugu community in the United States over the past 38 years, emphasizing how the association has played an instrumental role in uniting Telugu families and aiding younger generations in reconnecting with their language, culture, and traditions.
