On the early morning of August 1, 2026, torrential rainfall severely impacted the Idukki district, leading to widespread damage in numerous areas.
A devastating landslip occurred in Adoormala within the Kudayathoor panchayat of Thodupuzha, resulting in the tragic death of one woman and injuries to two others. According to local police reports, the landslip struck the residence of Mashikkalel Ravi Narayanan around 2:00 a.m..
At the time of the incident, Ravi, along with his wife Sumathi and their son Ratheesh, were inside their home. Immediately after the landslip, Sumathi was reported missing. Quick action from local residents allowed for the rescue of Ravi and Ratheesh, both of whom suffered injuries. Members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and personnel from the Fire and Rescue Force located the woman’s body later on Saturday morning.
Impact on Infrastructure
Multiple landslips and mudslides have obstructed major roads connecting the hilly areas of Idukki. Notably, a landslide near Pullupara, close to Kuttikkanam on the Kottarakkara–Dindigul National Highway, has disrupted traffic on the stretch between Kuttikkanam and Mundakkayam. Furthermore, Churakkulam Junction near Vandiperiyar faced waterlogging due to an overflow from a nearby stream, contributing to flooding at a local government hospital.
Additionally, the Kochi–Dhanushkodi National Highway leading to Munnar was also blocked following a landslide at Machiplavu. In another incident, falling mud struck a police vehicle in the vicinity of Mathayippara, near Upputhara.
Emergency Measures
In light of rising water levels, authorities have opened the shutters of the Malankara, Pambla, and Kallarkutty dams. Additionally, due to ongoing heavy rainfall, the Idukki District Collector has announced a holiday for all educational institutions in the district.
This incident underscores the pressing challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and the necessity for timely emergency responses to safeguard residents in vulnerable regions.
