As the Assembly elections approach in early 2027, the Indian National Congress launched its mass mobilisation initiative at the booth level on Friday, July 31, 2026. The event, held in **Fatehgarh Sahib**, was presided over by Congress’s general secretary for Punjab, **Bhupesh Bhagel**, who is currently on a nine-day tour of the state. In his address to party workers, Mr. Bhagel asserted that the ruling **Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)** was on its way out, positioning Congress as the only viable option for voters in Punjab. He predicted a five-cornered electoral battle, stating that the party faces competition not only from AAP but also from **BJP** at the national level.
“The BJP and AAP are two sides of the same coin,” he remarked, indicating that **Shiromani Akali Dal** and **Waris Punjab De** would also be significant contenders in the upcoming elections. Mr. Bhagel emphasized concerns regarding safety in Punjab, claiming, “Both the BJP and the AAP have no faith in the Constitution. The state is plagued by rampant drug trade, uncontrolled gangsters, and violence, with criminals operating without fear of the law.”
In a bid to reinforce the party’s strength, Punjab Congress president **Amarinder Singh Raja Warring** stated, “While differences of opinion may exist within any party, such dynamics are natural.” This assertion attempts to quell tensions and emphasize the party’s unity.
