Anna University has announced that a total of 2,56,366 engineering seats will be available at the undergraduate level across institutions in Tamil Nadu this year. This figure includes seats allocated under the management quota.
The seat distribution encompasses 11 government engineering colleges, three government-aided engineering colleges, three central government institutions, four university departments, and 16 constituent colleges of Anna University, along with 394 self-financing colleges.
This announcement follows the release of the seat matrix for the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026, which was made public by the committee after their inspection report was submitted last week. The counselling process is scheduled to commence on Monday.
Affiliations and Admissions Updates
In a change this year, seven new self-financing colleges and two off-campus centres of affiliated engineering colleges have received their affiliations. Conversely, the intake of students at 10 engineering colleges has been halted as the inspection committee found these institutions did not meet the required standards.
Additionally, permission to admit students has been denied for certain departments in 44 other colleges due to non-compliance with regulatory norms. This has resulted in the loss of over 8,000 seats, out of which 4,500 belong to departments in these 44 colleges. Common reasons for this denial include a shortfall in faculty members, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of library and sports facilities.
New Measures to Address Faculty Reliability
Meanwhile, the longstanding issue of ‘ghost faculty’ has been reportedly resolved following the implementation of key reforms during this year’s inspections. “Ghost faculty have been completely eliminated,” stated V. Kumaresan, Registrar-in-charge of Anna University. He elaborated on the introduction of a two-step Aadhaar-based biometric authentication system for faculty members, alongside a unique identification number known as the Faculty Identification Number (FIN).
Kumaresan noted that self-financing institutions are required to register their faculty members on the CAI web portal using Aadhaar-based biometrics and geo-tagged photographs. The inspection team will then verify the faculty member’s identity again through Aadhaar authentication. In cases where a faculty member changes colleges, both institutions must submit requests to Anna University to update their records on the portal. If a faculty member leaves the teaching field or retires, their FIN will be revoked.
The National Informatics Centre has updated this portal, while the Aadhaar-based authentication system was developed in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency. Presently, there are over 43,000 faculty members employed in the 394 self-financing engineering colleges across the state.
