The health conditions in Ernakulam are raising alarms, as the district recorded five deaths due to leptospirosis within the first 13 days of July, marking the highest fatalities related to this disease in the state. The deceased were reported from several locations including Kalamassery, Kuttampuzha, Kadayiruppu, Pattimattom, and Udyogamandal.
In conjunction with these deaths, Ernakulam is facing a surge in infectious disease cases this month, with influenza cases predominating across Kerala. As of July 13, the district has confirmed **392 cases of influenza**. Additionally, there have been **536 suspected and 252 confirmed cases of dengue**, along with **five suspected and 19 confirmed cases** of leptospirosis.
Other Districts and Health Initiatives
Other districts such as Palakkad, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kottayam also reported **one leptospirosis death each**, highlighting the widespread impact of the disease.
A district health official announced that an epidemic prevention action plan, named **‘Arogyabheri’**, was initiated about a week ago in response to the spike in communicable diseases. “Diseases are on the rise, and we require effective intervention from all sectors. The action plan has been implemented to address this issue, and its activities are currently in progress. We anticipate a marked reduction in cases once it is adopted by local self-government bodies,” the official stated.

Once it is implemented across the local self-government bodies, we expect a perceptible decline in the number of cases,” added the health official.
Among the reported deaths, the individual from Kalamassery was an 18-year-old migrant worker from Assam. Anju Manoj Mani, the chairperson of the Kalamassery municipality health standing committee, shared that preventive medicines have been distributed in light of this tragedy.
“Medicines have been distributed as a precautionary measure. We are planning to raise awareness among migrant workers about the need to seek medical attention promptly if they exhibit symptoms, such as fever,” Ms. Anju noted, emphasizing the importance of early medical intervention.
