In a significant diplomatic engagement, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband sat down for discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New York against a backdrop of increasing tension over the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting, held during the UN General Assembly, marks the first high-level dialogue between the two nations following the UK’s recent classification of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a terrorist entity, a move that has strained bilateral ties.

Iran Sets a Deadline for the US

Adding urgency to global diplomatic efforts, Iran has issued a four-to-five-day deadline for the United States to respond to conditions it has set for reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Mohsen Rezaei, a senior figure within Iran’s national security apparatus, conveyed this ultimatum through a televised statement, emphasizing that the set conditions are definitive with no scope for negotiation.

These developments occur amidst ongoing diplomatic interactions at the UN, where Araghchi has also held discussions with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Despite these talks, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has downplayed any notion of an imminent breakthrough.

Regional Implications and Conditions

Tehran has laid out specific demands, including lifting US sanctions and halting regional conflicts, particularly concerning Israeli actions in southern Lebanon. Araghchi reinforced these points through a Qatari intermediary, insisting that these conditions be implemented swiftly and in full.

Beyond Hormuz, Iranian military leaders have linked the tensions to other strategic locations, warning of potential wider conflicts involving the Bab al-Mandab strait near Yemen, controlled by Iran-aligned groups. During the dialogue, he emphasized concerns regarding Iran’s activities impacting UK interests, including issues relating to a British couple imprisoned in Iran. The UK calls for immediate consular access and clearer communications in the wake of recent geopolitical frictions.
