Named in memory of Martha Mills, a young girl who tragically lost her life in 2021 due to sepsis, this rule has been a beacon for those advocating for patient rights and enhanced healthcare oversight.

Introduced after Martha’s death ignited a push for healthcare reform, this innovative measure permits patients, their families, and healthcare workers the opportunity to request a comprehensive review of ongoing medical care. Initially launched within inpatient settings, the initiative has shown tremendous potential, yielding life-saving interventions for numerous individuals. According to available data, thousands of inquiries via hospital-run helplines have led to critical changes in treatment, including patient transfers to intensive care units.

A New Hope for Emergency Departments
