Canada’s Dominant Display in WXV Rugby Series Opener

Canada demonstrated their rugby prowess with a striking 64-26 victory over Scotland in the opener of the WXV Series held in Edinburgh. The Canadian team, coming off their impressive 2025 World Cup final run, overwhelmed the Scots with a barrage of tries, showcasing their superior tactical play from the outset.

The match began with Canada’s Kiki Idowu masterminding a skillful pass to Rachel Smith, putting the Scottish defense immediately on the back foot. Lizzie Gibson capitalized on this momentum, scoring the first try by storming through Scotland’s line. Just moments later, Olivia Apps stretched Canada’s lead by diving over the corner.

Scotland, not to be outdone, responded through Evie Gallagher, who marked her return to international play by charging through Canada’s defense, narrowing the points gap. However, the Canadians quickly countered with Gibson securing her second try, bolstering their lead.

Throughout the first half, Canada continued to exert pressure, with Brittanny Kassil and Julia Omokhuale adding to the scoreboard, both crossing the try line through powerful runs. The Scots managed a moment of brilliance when Rhea Clarke’s maneuver created an opportunity for her team, allowing Shona Campbell to score after some adept passing.

As the second half unfolded, Taylor Perry’s solo effort further dashed Scotland’s hopes of a comeback. Canada’s tempo never waned, and Apps once again exploited defensive gaps to score with ease. Lana Skeldon briefly revitalized Scotland’s efforts with a try, but Canada’s substitutes responded swiftly, including a notable try from Justine Pelletier.

Scotland’s Rhona Lloyd later took advantage of a precise kicked pass, tallying the team’s fourth try, yet Canada maintained command. Gabrielle Senft and debutant Savannah Bauder sealed Canada’s triumph with late scores, demonstrating the depth and skill across the Canadian lineup.

Looking ahead, Scotland will face a robust challenge against New Zealand at the Hive Stadium, while Canada prepares for an anticipated clash versus England at Sandy Park, reminiscent of their World Cup encounter.
