Mandalay’s Tada-U International Airport, a major transport hub in Myanmar, faced disruption as operations were suspended following what officials described as an attempted drone strike. The incident, which emerged on September 11, has been attributed to pro-democracy rebels known as the People’s Defence Force, according to state-controlled media.

Drone Strikes Alleged

Reports state that six drones were allegedly used to target the airport, aiming to disrupt military operations there. Although the attack temporarily affected flights, no casualties or significant damage were reported. In response to the situation, all international departures and arrivals for September 11 and 12 were cancelled by Myanmar Airways International, with domestic services rerouted to a nearby facility for the time being.

Background of Ongoing Unrest

The attack highlights the persistent conflict within Myanmar, a situation exacerbated since the military coup in February 2021 ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. This unrest has evolved into a fierce civil conflict, involving various armed groups, some aligned with ethnic minorities, and others with the previously established democratic government.
