NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, during a recent statement in Tamil Nadu’s Mahabalipuram, characterized the upcoming delimitation exercise as a calculated “conspiracy” by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at undermining the political influence of Tamil Nadu. He expressed strong sentiments against the process, labeling those who support it as a “21st-century Ettappan,” referencing a Tamil term synonymous with betrayal.
Gandhi articulated his concerns, stating, “There is an attempt by the BJP to carry out delimitation. It is designed to disenfranchise people and take away the political power of the people of Tamil Nadu. This is a BJP conspiracy.” His remarks highlight the opposition’s fears regarding the potential impacts of the delimitation process on representation within the state.
In a rallying cry to the citizens of Tamil Nadu, Gandhi urged local and national political entities to firmly oppose the delimitation proposal. He emphasized that “No Tamil person should support delimitation. Every Tamil person should oppose delimitation. Every Tamil party and every national party should defeat delimitation in the House.” This appeal reflects the deep-rooted political sensitivities associated with representation and power dynamics in the region.
