Etihad Airways Challenges Premier League’s Financial Findings

Etihad Airways, the primary sponsor of Manchester City, is considering legal proceedings against the Premier League. This move comes in response to a report by an independent commission accusing the football club of breaching financial rules.

The commission’s report concluded that Manchester City had inflated their revenue figures through sponsorship deals deemed non-compliant, allegedly backed by the Abu Dhabi United Group. Despite not being named directly, Etihad Airways opposes the report’s implications, asserting that the findings have adverse effects on its reputation.

The airline, based in the United Arab Emirates, has been associated with Manchester City since 2009. Its involvement has been pivotal in the financial growth of the club. In 2011, a notable £400 million deal was made for the stadium naming rights, later revised in 2021.

Etihad’s Firm Stand Against Allegations

Etihad Airways has expressed disappointment over the lack of consultation by the Premier League during the investigation process. In a statement released recently, the airline emphasised that it was not approached for input or clarification during the commission’s review, nor given a chance to defend itself against perceived misleading conclusions.

The airline highlighted that the Premier League’s public handling of the findings has caused significant damage, and has called attention to the selective leakage of information, which it finds detrimental. Etihad is urging the Premier League to take responsibility for the potentially tarnishing consequences of this disclosure.

Maintaining a strong bond with Manchester City and its global fanbase, Etihad remains committed to the partnership. The company reaffirmed its support for the club as it seeks to overturn the commission’s findings through available legal avenues.

Future Legal Steps

As Etihad Airways evaluates its options, it plans to pursue legal advice to safeguard its interests amid these accusations. The airline’s determination to uphold its reputation underscores its dedication to maintaining a transparent and fair image in the industry.
